Militia election returns, 1820-1861.

An act approved 1819 Dec. 17 provided for the organization and disciplining of the State Militia. This act also provided for the election of local militia officers. The act required the return of these elections to be sent to the governor so that he could issue commissions to officers duly elected (Ala. Acts, 1819). This series consists of returns from counties sent to the governor informing him of the results of the election. Information includes the county of origin, the date of the election, the names and elected positions of officers elected. Files are broken down by annual quarter.
